Traumatology

Traumatology is that specialty of medicine that deals with the study of injuries to the locomotive system. Although it is true, the reality is much more complex, since traumatology does not only deal with those injuries produced by trauma, but also takes care of the study, prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and research of those of congenital or acquired origin, which affect the entire locomotive system throughout life.

It is important to note that, in addition to bone disorders, all those pathologies that affect ligaments, joints, muscles and tendons also fall within its field. Therefore, an orthopedic surgeon will treat any problem we have in the spine, extremities or the musculoskeletal system, whether it is produced by a trauma or any other cause.

Therefore, traumatology -unlike other medical specialties, which are only clinical-, is also a surgical specialty.

The field of action of this specialty includes the clinical assessment, diagnosis, prevention, treatment by surgical and non-surgical means and rehabilitation appropriate to the care of patients who are carriers of congenital and acquired diseases, deformities and traumatic and non-traumatic functional disorders of the locomotive system and its associated structures.

Modern orthopedics is interested in the study of the form and function of the musculoskeletal system and its action is directed against those conditions that deform the architecture of the human body by altering the balance of its mechanisms and against those diseases of the bones or soft tissues that lead to loss of form or function.
